Garth Crooks has accused Jose Mourinho of ‘killing’ Marcus Rashford at Manchester United.
The Red Devils boss substituted Rashford in the 77th minute on their 2-2 draw with Southampton after the young England striker had created both goals to get his team back in the game.
Mourinho later explained that the 21-year-old had asked to come off due to “fatigue”.
It came just days after the Portuguese sparked outrage with his reaction to Rashford missing a chance against Young Boys in the Champions League.
On that occasion, he turned to the crowd and shook his head, showing his disbelief and displeasure at the spurned opportunity to score.
Garth Crooks has suggested Mourinho’s handling of Rashford is having a negative impact on the player.
The BBC pundit, who had a loan spell at United in the 1980s, put Rashford in his team of the week.
Seemingly ignoring the manager’s explanation that the forward was tired and requested to be substituted against Southampton, he said: “This really can’t go on.
“Jose Mourinho is killing Marcus Rashford. The lad pulled Manchester United from the jaws of defeat at Southampton and then Jose gave the one man who was desperate to win the game for him the hook? It made no sense.
“The kid was on a roll and anyone who has played the game could see that. Mourinho may have won trophies but he destroys players in the process.
“He is doing to Rashford what he did to Arjen Robben at Chelsea. Rashford must get out of United now before what little confidence he has left is destroyed.”
